Phonological awareness implies the ability to identify and manipulate the acoustic structure of spoken language independently of meaning, and includes several different skills that contribute to the automated application of the phonetic system of language.
The development of phonological awareness takes place intensively in children of preschool age and the developmental plateau is reached around the eighth year of life in hearing children. The dynamics of development implies, with age, an increasingly refined sensitivity to the lower segments of the language system. At the youngest age, children first notice and become aware of words, then syllables, and finally phonemes, which corresponds to the hierarchical model of word structure. Performance on phonological awareness tasks is a significant predictor of reading and writing skills.
Given the fact that orderly speech-language development, and the subsequent possibility and quality of literacy, require well-developed phonetic characteristics of speech and that phonological processing deficits form the basis of specific disorders during the subsequent acquisition of reading and writing skills, the task of this research is to examine phonological awareness in hearing impaired children, who have a significantly more specific acoustic experience. The aim of the work is to determine the phonetic-phonological characteristics of the speech of the mentioned population, as well as the existence of phonological awareness deficits and the factors that affect them. The research included 21 hearing-impaired children between the ages of five and ten. Phonological awareness was examined with the revised FONT test, in order to gain insight into the quality and developmental characteristics of the phonological awareness of the population of hearing- impaired children.
The results of the research indicate that the phonological awareness of the examined sample is developed, given that the achievements exceed the level of chance. The total achieved achievements of hearing-impaired children, of 64,5%, suggest that phonological awareness is not developed to the extent necessary for acquiring age-expected phonological insights into the phonological structure of the mother tongue. The best achievements of hearing-impaired children are achieved on the following tasks: recognition of rhyme and identification of the initial phoneme, then joining of syllables, syllabic segmentation and identification of the final phoneme. While the lowest achievements were achieved when performing tasks that require phonemic awareness (phonemic segmentation, substitution and elimination).
It was concluded that in the examined sample, the age of the examinees affects the phonological awareness of hearing impaired children at the level of phonemic segmentation, while the frequency of rehabilitation affects the execution of syllable segmentation.",
