AB - Introduction. Stuttering is a speech disorder and its etiology is an interplay of genetic and environmental factors. Despite the absence of definite etiology understanding, there are numerous available treatments for stuttering. For some adult patients, the contemporary concept includes psychotherapist involvement concomitant with speech therapist. Case report. A 24-year-old girl, who is a monozygotic twin, has been stuttering from early childhood, while her twin sister has never exhibited a speech disorder. Since the role of genetic factors was evident (father stuttered too), the focus of this report was on environmental factors of physical and psychological development (slow development), as well as family psychodynamics (divorce of parents in early adolescent period and criticizing from her father for stuttering). The patient, as well as her family members, denied the significance of the symptoms, which could also explain the absence of early treatment. Conclusion. Unfavorable conditions of psychological development, as well as family psychodynamics could explain speech therapy starting at the age of twenty-four and being insufficient for symptom overcoming. Psychotherapy is indicated in the integrative part of treatment in this case of speech disorder.
AB - Uvod. Mucanje je govorni poremećaj čija etiologija podrazumeva međudejstvo genetskih i sredinskih faktora. Uprkos odsustvu konačnih odgovora o etiologiji mucanja, postoji više različitih terapijskih metoda. U nekim slučajevima lečenja odraslih bolesnika, savremeni model lečenja mucanja, pored logopeda, uključuje i angažovanje psihoterapeuta. Prikaz bolesnika.

Research shows that parental depression has negative effects on various spheres of children's psychophysical development. The subject of this paper is depression of parents of children with disability. Research on the presence of depression in parents of children with disabilitiy is presented, as well as research on differences in depression between fathers and mothers of children with disability, the relation between depression and the type of child's disability, and the relation of depression with demographic variables and parental support. Objective. This paper aims to analyze available research on the depression of parents of children with disability, the relation between depression and correlation variables, as well as to explain the research findings. The aim of the paper derives from the importance of the research subject for psychology of disability and rehabilitation. Methods. The method involved searching for scientific research available on relevant online search engines: Google Scholar, KoBSON, ScienceDirect. The basic search was performed on the basis of the following key words - depression and parents of children with disability. Results. The research analysis indicates the inconsistency of the results on the presence of depression in parents of children with disability. The paper provides findings that consistently suggest higher levels of depression in mothers compared to fathers of children with disability. Research practice indicates a link between depression and the type of disability, i.e. depression and behavioral characteristics of children with disability. There is no systematic research on the relation between parental depression in children with disabilities and demographic variables. The availability of professional support is negatively related to the presence of depression. Conclusion. The inconsistency of the results on the presence of depression in parents of children with disability is, to a large extent, a consequence of methodological reasons. Reducing depression in parents of children with disability has a double positive effect - on themselves and their children.

Ipak,
jednačina koja objašnjava mucanje nije potpuna bez poznavanja sredinskih
faktora, a naročito dejstva psiholoških faktora na njegov nastanak i razvoj. To
I konačno,
psihopatologije i teorije i prakse psihoterapije.
dugotrajne i plodne akademske prakse izučavanja psihologije govora i jezika i
Momčila Živkovića i prof.

AB - This study presents a construction and psychometric evaluation of the Religious Identity Status Questionnaire-RISQ for the assessment of the religious identity status according to Marcia's Ego identity status approach. The initial item pool was generated based on Erikson's theory of psychosocial development, Marcia's Ego identity status approach and interviews with adolescents and young adults. A factor analysis of the initial item pool was performed on data obtained from a sample of 394 secondary school and university students from Serbia to select items for the questionnaire. Validity of the questionnaire was examined on a sample of 1155 subjects. The results of the CFA suggest that subscales of the RISQ measure four factors corresponding to the identity statuses of Marcia's model. Correlations with ideological identity subscales of the EOM-EIS-2 suggest the convergent validity of the questionnaire. Configural measurement invariance was established for gender and denominational groups. Metric invariance was established for gender and among orthodox and catholic participants, whereas scalar invariance was established for gender, but not for denominational groups.
AB - Ova studija predstavlja konstrukciju i psihometrijsku evaluaciju Upitnika religijskog identiteta (eng. Religious Identity Status Questionnaire - RISQ) namenjenog proceni religijskog identiteta u kontekstu Marsijevog pristupa Ego identitetu.

AB - Hearing loss is a risk factor for a child's appropriate psychosocial development but is not a risk factor for the development of resiliency. Thus, the aim of this research was to determine the level of resiliency, as well as its relation to internal and external factors, in deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) adolescents. The sample included 55 DHH students, 12-14 years of age. Resiliency Scales for Children & Adolescents was used in this research. The obtained results showed that DHH students perceived their resiliency in the average range, except in subscales: Self-efficacy (within Sense of Mastery Scale), Social Support (within Sense of Relatedness Scale), Impairment (within Emotional Reactivity Scale) in which the results were within a higher range, and Recovery (within Emotional Reactivity Scale) in which the results were in a lower range.

AB - Empirical findings on the difficulties deaf children face in certain areas of cognitive, conative, emotional, and social development served as a basis for the Integral Development Method for Deaf Children. The principles of the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) relating to the importance of sign language, neglected for a long time, provided a wider basis of this method. The first part of the article presents the method in a general way. The research part of the article examined the results of two experimentally controlled workshops. The first workshop examined the effects of various non-verbal stimulation techniques on cognitive development. The second workshop examined the effects of a systematic application of sign language on communicative and educative development. Data in Study 1 were collected by Piaget's test and in Study 2 by the Communication Competence Scale. The sample consisted of 50 subjects in Study 1 and 60 subjects in Study 2. The subjects were deaf children aged 8 to 12. The results confirmed that a systematic application of various non-verbal workshop techniques that are suitable for deaf children significantly contributes to the promotion of cognitive development and that they effectively enhance and accelerate the concrete operational stage. A systematic application of Serbian sign language influenced the promotion of Serbian speech-language and complete communicative competence, as well as higher cohesion of sign language and speech-language communication skills. Sign language also influenced school achievement.

Social distance of general population towards the blind three decades ago and today

AB - Social distance is operationalized as the willingness of respondents to accept or reject a particular social relationship with members of the target group. Comparison of available empirical findings on the social distance towards the blind at several points of time did not lead to unambiguous conclusions. Therefore, we fully repeated the research from 1983. The aim was to determine the changes in the order of questions in the scale and the differences in social distance toward the blind for the complete scale and each of the items in the studies conducted in 1983 and 2016. In both studies the same modified Bogardus scale was used in a quota sample of adults. The results show that the closest social relationships (marriage and intimate relationships) are still at the top of the scale. Several items in the scale have changed ranking significantly (superiors at work, sharing hotel rooms, killing blind-born children). Values of the Chi-square test showed that there are significant differences in the complete scale and in the following relations: sharing hotel rooms (significantly increased distance), child marriage, child education, help in the street, municipality councilor, superiors at work, living in special institutions (significant reduction in distance). Qualitative analysis showed that the motivational basis for accepting and rejecting relationships with blind persons is less irrational today than three decades ago. Although smaller social distance in the recent study can partly be attributed to a lower degree of aggressiveness of respondents compared to that from the previous study, the fact that the explanations of answers today are far more rational than three decades ago shows that positive changes have actually occurred.

AB - This paper represents a review of genesis and basic assertions of the social disability model (SDM) and its impact on theory and practice in psychology and rehabilitation. With its view on disability as a form of oppression, SDM is focused on changing society. The developmental pathway from the earliest radical forms of the SDM to the recent more neutral orientation is shown. The study then turns to the changes in psychological theory and practice. The contribution of critical psychology in the struggle for social change is described first. Afterwards, traditional psychology is criticized on several levels, with more contemporary views offered in the spirit of the new disability paradigm. These are shown as useful for assessment and intervention of disabled persons. The work is especially focused on psychological counselling, with a brief overview of theoretical aspects of counselling, compatible with the SDM and recommendations of different authors within this framework, concerning counselling practice in psychology and rehabilitation.

AB - Predmet istraživanja: Rad daje pregled savremenih studija o psihosocijalnom
funkcionisanju roditelja i porodice dece sa ometenošću tokom rane faze
Uloga roditelja
počinje još u kući, ranim detekcijama razvojnih teškoća kod deteta. Rano
mobilisanje roditelja i uključenost u rane intervencija ima pozitivan uticaj
reči, pregled i prikaz istraživanja. Mnoga istraživanja pokazuju da roditelji
dece sa ometenošću prolaze kroz individualne krize (npr. povećan nivo
stresa, depresivana reagovanja). Teškoće (koje se tiču nege deteta, psihološke,
socijalne, ekonomske) pogađaju funkcionisanje cele porodice.
Rezultati: Diskutovane su osobenost funkcionisanja porodice (podela brige
o detetu, prisustvo/odsustvo oba roditelja, prisustvo/odsustvo socijalne podrške).
funkcionsanje roditelja i porodice nije direktna posledica ometenosti deteta
proveravaju (npr. strategije prevladavanja stresa, rezilijabilnost, verovanja
i stavovi roditelja).
Zaključak: Roditelji se smatraju neophodnim partnerima u savremeno
koncipiranom tretmanu ometenosti. U radu su prikazane strategije psihološke
podrške roditeljima i porodici kroz edukaciju, savetovanje i psihoterapijske
intervencije. Predložene strategije su proizašle iz empirijskih potvrda
navedenih u ovom radu.
AB - Research subject: This paper reviews current studies on psychosocial functioning
of parents and families of children with disabilities during the early stages of
adaptation to this circumstance. The paper gives a strategy proposal, based on
the presented studies that provide family support. The role of parents begins
in the home, with the early detection of child’s developmental problems. Early
mobilization and involvement of parents in early interventions has a positive
impact on the further course of rehabilitation. Adaptation of the parents to the
child with a disability affects the child’s adaptation to their own disability.
Method: The method of work is an examination of relevant databases, based on
keywords, review and presentation of research. Many studies show that parents
of children with disabilities go through individual crises (e.g. increased stress
levels, depressive reactions). Difficulties (psychological, social, economic, those
related to child care) affecting the functioning of the whole family.
Results: We discussed the characteristic of functioning families (division of child
care, the presence/absence of both parents, and the presence/absence of social
support). We are also cited studies showing that there is no substantial difference
in the functioning of families with and without children with disabilities.
Studies imply that functioning of parents and families is not a direct result of
the child’s disability, but is correlated with variables whose effects are still under
the scrutiny of contemporary researches (e.g., coping strategies, resilience, beliefs
and attitudes of parents).
Conclusion: Parents are considered as essential partners in modern treatment of
disability. The paper presents the strategy of psychological support to parents
and families through education, counseling and psychotherapeutic intervention.

Contemporary views on selective mutism

AB - The aim of this paper is to review contemporary literature on selective mutism (SM), available in our language. The paper includes a contemporary definition of the disorder, previous studies of selective mutism, theories about its origin, and treatment. SM is a disorder that occurs in childhood, when a child's speech is selectively lacking in certain social situations. School is the context in which the disorder is typically manifested, which is why SM is often diagnosed only after children start school. The paper gives a historical account of changes in views on this disorder. Modern conceptions emphasize selective inability of children to spontaneously and successfully express themselves verbally. In researching SM, case studies on children who have selective mutism are most commonly published. Etiological factors are not precisely defined, and different conceptions give their interpretations depending on various theoretical frameworks. Some studies consistently indicate a relation between SM and social anxiety, and some with opposing behavior and delays in language development. Based on theoretical explanations of SM, psychological interventions (behavioral and cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic and projective techniques, counseling and family therapy) are created. Modern treatment of selective mutism includes an eclectic approach and emphasizes the role of teachers and school in general. Future studies should deepen the knowledge about selective mutism, specify the methodological procedure and stimulate the individualized treatment of children with SM.
Savremen tretman SM-a podrazumeva eklektički pristup uz naglašavanje uloga nastavnika i škole u celini. Buduća izučavanja treba da prodube znanja, preciziraju metodološku proceduru i stimulišu individualizovan tretman deteta sa SM.

Future studies should deepen the knowledge about selective mutism, specify the methodological procedure and stimulate the individualized treatment of children with SM., Cilj rada je da pruži pregled savremene literature o selektivnom mutizmu (SM) koji bi bio dostupan na našem jeziku, budući da u našoj sredini ovaj poremećaj nije sistematski izučavan. Savremen tretman SM-a podrazumeva eklektički pristup uz naglašavanje uloga nastavnika i škole u celini. Buduća izučavanja treba da prodube znanja, preciziraju metodološku proceduru i stimulišu individualizovan tretman deteta sa SM.",

AB - Emergent literacy consists of the skills, knowledge, and attitudes toward literacy,
that are developmental precursors to reading and writing. We could consider emergent
literacy a foundation of literacy, or set of pre-reading skills, that a child gains from birth
until formal instruction in reading and writing. Pre-reading skills represent the basic
knowledge about literacy, which includes general knowledge and concepts, language
skills and perceptual-motor skills. Typically developed children learn these skills
naturally, during the childhood, from birth until the beginning of formal instruction in
reading and writing, at home and from the environment.
Children with visual impairment (both blind and low vision) cannot attain prereading
skills without instruction. Visual impairment limits a child’s incidental learning
and decreases opportunities for gaining access to experiences. Infants and toddlers with
visual impairments require lots of interactions and early life experience that supports
their oral language development, perceptual-motor development, awareness of print or
Braille and opportunities to explore writing.
Pre-reading activities for visually impaired children need to be organized within
early intervention. Professional support and structured activities play a key role in
facilitating interactions of visually impaired children with the environment and directly
providing them with different experiences. The support must be directed towards gaining
meaningful language, literacy concepts and perceptual-motor skills that directly enable
acquisition of literacy, either print or Braille.
Early structured intervention and a team approach, with the aim of supporting prereading
activities, can be important predictor of successful reading competence of blind
or low vision child later in the school.

Stuttering in children: A review of psychological theoratical and treatment approaches with an emphasis on the role of school environment

AB - This paper provides an overview of contemporary research on the psycho-social and educational characteristics of children who stutter. Research findings do not agree on the presence of anxiety, social anxiety, self-esteem, and depression in children who stutter. However, there are enough indicators to suggest that the psychological functioning of children who stutter is specific, regardless of whether some of the psychological factors are considered causes or consequences of stuttering. A literature review points that authors agree that children who stutter suffer the negative reactions from the environment, which are often present in the school context, adversely affecting their socialization. Modern literature takes into account the psycho-social context in which stuttering occurs, and this review is an attempt to justify psychological approaches to the treatment of children who stutter. The arguments that oppose the neurological view on the etiology of stuttering and direct forms of treatment aimed at improving fluency are discussed. An overview and critical discussion of indirect types of treatment that are aimed to overcome stuttering through environmental changes, which are considered to affect the occurrence of the disorder, are also provided. Contemporary concepts of treatment, which expand and enrich the traditional treatment approaches, and are in line with the social model of disability are presented. Different approaches that insist on psycho-social interventions in schools that would provide better acceptance of children with this disorder, and prevent psychopathology and academic difficulties in adulthood are outlined. Recommandation for further research of this, still insufficiently examined disorder as well as the implications for professional practice, based on the psychological approach, are provided.

abstract = "This paper provides an overview of contemporary research on the psycho-social and educational characteristics of children who stutter. Recommandation for further research of this, still insufficiently examined disorder as well as the implications for professional practice, based on the psychological approach, are provided., Ovaj rad daje prikaz savremenih istraživanja o psihosocijalnim i obrazovnim karakteristikama dece koja mucaju. AB - Hearing impairment is a condition that involves medical, psychological and social aspects. Surveys report that children and adolescents with hearing impairment show high prevalence of psychopathology. Among numerous definitions which are largely overlapping (Oppositional Defiant Disorders, Externalizing Disorder, Behavior Problems, Socio-emotional Problems), we have chosen the definition of conduct disorder given by the World Health Organization in ICD -10. Some of the criteria for the diagnosis are: violation of the rules of adults, frequent anger and resentment, deliberate destruction of other people's property. The aim of this paper is to examine the relationships between hearing impairment and conduct disorder. The survey was conducted in Serbia, the environment characterized by specific circumstances concerning the educational and socio-economic conditions. This society has not developed a tradition of inclusive education for children, and inclusive trends are slow in general. The study was conducted on 375 patients of whom 169 are with a hearing impairment, and 178 with no hearing impairment. The respondents with hearing impairment attended school for hearing- impaired children. Some of the respondents with hearing impairment live in abroad school and some with their families. As an instrument, we used a scale for assessing behavioral disorders (Dimoski, 2004), which was filled by the specialists working in the institutions for children and youth with hearing impairments. The survey did not show statistically significant differences in the presence of behavioral disorders in the sample without hearing impairment and the sample of individuals with hearing impairment. However, the results showed that the children with hearing impairment showed significantly greater degree of two indicators of behavioral disorders - the tendency to steal (t = -3.18, p = 0.002) and extortion of money or benefit from the younger or weaker (t = -2.07, p = 0.039). This paper also deals with correlates of behavioral disorders in all patients (sex, age, academic achievement, socio-economic status) and with connection to the onset, severity of hearing impairment and type of accommodation (boarding or family) in the group of patients with hearing impairment. The male respondents (t = 3:07, p = 0.003) with lower school achievement (F = 11.219, p = 0.000) have more evident indicators of behavioral disorders. This work has important implications relating to the practice of working with children and youth with hearing impairment. It was recommended to work on prevention of behavioral disorders, and suggested which types of psychosocial interventions for those who express this disorder may be used.

AB - This paper deals with the social attitude towards persons with disabilities and the importance of this relationship for the implementation of educational inclusion in Serbia. The society attitude is discussed through the attitudes towards persons with disabilities, and attitudes towards educational inclusion. Persons with disabilities occupy a marginalized position that is a multiple determined. Education of this group have a significant impact on the process of marginalization - poor education deepens, quality education helps to overcome marginalized social positions. Attitude towards persons with disabilities are characterized by the presence of bias, lack of information and rare contacts. Research in our community do not give consistent results, and there is also tendency of respondents to give socially acceptable answers. Assessment of attitudes and work on the development of more tolerant attitudes towards persons with disabilities is are essential in creating the conditions for the implementation of educational inclusion. Educational inclusion, embedded in the philosophy of social model of disability, implies environment that adapts to persons with disabilities. These environmental preparations lacked during the process of introducing inclusive education in our country. In the implementation of educational inclusion is necessary to work on the conditions for adequate reception of such children to regular school system, which includes work on the development of tolerant attitudes towards persons with disabilities.

AB - This study deals with the presentation of contemporary literature on the
psychological characteristics of the elderly and is the first research on this topic in our
society. Age is a period of complex life transition. General functioning of the elderly
implies a reduction or loss of physical, psychological and social skills which can lead
to the development of specific disability associated with aging. The study presents the
contemporary research on the subjective sense of well-being, quality of life of the elderly,
the subjective assessment of health, social relationships, self-esteem, proactive ways of
dealing with stress and the factors that determine them. Special importance is given to
the development of disability that is associated with aging and risks of its occurrence.
The study deals with the development of psychopathological tendencies in the elderly
(depression, anxiety) as well as factors related to this phenomenon. Discussed were the
prevention of disability associated with aging and the prevention of development of
psychopathology. The last part of the study is dedicated to the work of rehabilitation
of the elderly that is bound to providing psychological help. Quoted are various forms
of this approach – psychotherapy, counseling, skills training, and programs for psychosocial
assistance to the elderly. Conclusion emphasized the need for further research,
improved procedures for the examination of the elderly and assessment of efficiency of
certain forms of providing psychological help.

Cognitive processes in persons with intellectual disability as a factor of their participation in psychotherapy

AB - This paper reviews research on cognitive processes in persons with intellectual
disability (ID) as a prerequisite of the effective application of cognitive-behavioral therapy
in treating mental disorders in these persons. This domain of investigation is important
for the following reasons: persons with ID, according to the results of some studies, are at
greater risk of developing mental disorders, in comparison to persons from the general
population; the efficacy of cognitive-behavioral therapy in treating mental disorders
in persons without ID has been empirically supported; there is some evidence that this
psychotherapy may be effective in persons with ID. Cognitive behavioral therapy aims
to treat emotional problems by using various techniques which lead to changes in false
cognitions and, as a consequence, to changes in dysfunctional emotions and behavior. In
this work we present empirical findings on the following cognitive processes and abilities
in persons with ID: verbal abilities; self-concept; metacognition; recognition and labeling
of emotions; linking events and emotions; discriminating thoughts, feelings and behavior;
understanding the mediating role of cognition in the relationship between situations
and emotional and behavioral responses. Research suggests that persons with mild and
moderate ID are capable to discriminate and label various emotions, and to link events
and emotions, but that they have significant difficulties in understanding the mediating
role of cognitions in emotional problems. Further, persons with ID have constraints in
verbal abilities and in metacognition which impose difficulties on their participation in
psychotherapy. However, several authors express the opinion that it is possible to work
on the development of cognitive abilities which are required for the application of the
cognitive-behavioral approach, and that this work may be a part of psychotherapy.

this work we present empirical findings on the following cognitive processes and abilities
in persons with ID: verbal abilities; self-concept; metacognition; recognition and labeling
of emotions; linking events and emotions; discriminating thoughts, feelings and behavior;
understanding the mediating role of cognition in the relationship between situations
and emotional and behavioral responses.
However, several authors express the opinion that it is possible to work
on the development of cognitive abilities which are required for the application of the
cognitive-behavioral approach, and that this work may be a part of psychotherapy.",
