Vocabulary development and formation of concepts is an important aspect of working with deaf and hard of hearing children. A child has adopted a notion when it has come to understand that a word is only a sign for an object, occurrence or event and that in communicating that word it transmits its thoughts and feelings to another. Notions presented to deaf and hard of hearing children at school by way of speech, must be explained by using sign language (gestures). The population sample consisted of 91 deaf and hard of hearing pupils of elementary school age. The aim of this study was to evaluate the level of adoption sign language and verbal expression in deaf and hard of hearing children of elementary school age, and understanding of concepts within the lexical area Religion. We used the list of stimulus words in the lexical area Religion. A quantities and qualitative analysis was completed of the obtained linguistic data. Age, that is, belonging to different school grades, affects on ...the knowledge and understanding of abstract concepts. Acquiring of knowledge in school is one of important factors which affect understanding of notions of deaf and hard of hearing children In developing the vocabulary and formation of concepts it is necessary to execute lexical drills in both sign and verbal form. Systematic instruction, correctly directed methodologically, allows for constant and comprehensive enrichment and expansion of vocabulary from the quantitative and qualitative aspect.
Sistematska nastava, pravilno metodički usmerena, omogućuje stalno i svestrano proširivanje i bogaćenje rečnika u kvantitativnom i kvalitativnom pogledu.
