The process of deinstitutionalization, which is ongoing in our country, has contributed to the increase of foster families and the placement of children without parental care primarily in family forms of accommodation. However, for a certain number of children, finding suitable foster families will be difficult, or the stay in foster families will be short-lived. The subject of this master thesis is the (in)stability of housing children without parental care. We define stability as the unchanged long-term form of placement as long as the child has the legal right to use it.
The aim of this research is to determine the factors that lead to the placement instability of children without parental care.
The research sample consists of 50 children who have been placed in the "Jefimija" Home for Children and Youth in the previous ten years, i.e. since January 1, 2012. This includes all children who are currently enrolled, in 2022, until the time when the research begins. The data was collec...ted by analyzing the documentation in their files.
The research results show that there is a statistically significant relationship between the existence of housing instability and gender (χ2 = 3.40, df = 1, rφ = .29, p = .04), and the existence of problems occurring during previous placements of children (χ2 = 5.86, df = 1, rφ = .34, p = .01). A correlation was also established in relation to age (r = -.11, p > .05), i.e. the lower the age in which the child was moved from home, the greater the number of changes in placement is. Also, the greater the number of behavioral problems, the greater the number of changes in placement (r = 64, p < .01). Additionally, the connection was established in relation to siblings (t = 2.68, df = 48, p < .01, d = 0.85), and the existence of a diagnosis of mental disorder (t = 3.93, df = 48, p < .001, d = 1.13).
Placement instability is a multidimensional problem, which definitely deserves more attention from the scientific public. The results of this research indicate that characteristics such as gender, growth when moving from the primary family, the occurrence of problems in the appearance, forms of neglect and/or abuse in childbirth are factors related to the appearance of factors of change of condition. Also, the more behavioral problems present, the more changes in placement, and the younger the child was when moved, the more changes there are. By identifying the factors that lead to instability, opportunities for developing preventive programs and improving family accommodation services are opened.
