Abstract

Excessive screen time in the early childhood may have harmful effects on cognitive, social and emotional development. Numerous studies revealed an association between long screen time and obesity, sleep problems, attention deficits, speech and language difficulties, and behavioral problems in general population. Some recently published studies suggest a link between extensive early screen exposure and autistic-like behavior. The younger the children were when they started using screens, the more likely they were to have autism-like symptoms. It is considered that the first three years of life are the most sensitive period for the development of negative consequences of screen-based activities. Longer daily screen time and cumulative effects of screen exposure also elevate the risk of autism-like behavior. Children with autism, as a rule, like to use digital technologies. Some studies indicate that children with autism have longer screen time, compared with their neorotypical p...eers. Excessive screen use in children who have previously been diagnosed with autism makes the clinical picture more severe and negatively affects their expressive and receptive speech. The obtained findings logically imposed the need for digital detox. Digital detox is defined as a timeouts in the use of electronic devices, either in full or in particular areas of use. The initial results are encouraging, given that screen removal could increase social interactions in children with autistic-like behavior. Additional longitudinal studies are needed to establish the causal relationship between screen exposure and autism, as well as the real effects of digital detox.
