The student period carries with it many challenges that push the boundaries of endurance for young people. They most often manifest themselves in the form of requests for adaptation to new living conditions, which include changing their place of residence, changing social environment, academic requirements, first significant emotional connections and first disappointments, financial difficulties, etc. All the aforementioned challenges of academic life very often lead to continuous exposure to stress, which can have huge consequences on the mental health and daily functioning of the individual and very often lead to anxiety and depression.
The subject of this paper is the prevalence of anxiety, depression and stress in the student population, measured using the DASS-21 scale. The aim of this paper is to determine whether and to what extent students have experience of anxiety, depression and stress, as well as to what extent the prevalence of the three entities varies, depending on age,... mode of study, year of study and type of faculty.
The study included 547 University of Belgrade respondents, of different ages and levels of study, both sexes, with a male population of 98 (18%) and a female share of 448 (82%). The age of students ranges from 18 to 39 years. Students are divided into three groups, depending on the type of faculties they attend, social, natural-mathematical and technical, and the place of origin is Belgrade or other cities in Serbia. It is important to note that the questionnaire, together with the DASS-21 scale, was set during the June and July exam periods, given the premise that students were most stressed during this period, and that anxiety and depression symptoms could then be best detected.
Based on the results of the research, it was found that students in Serbia are exposed to stress, and that to a somewhat greater extent than in previous studies, anxiety and depression are present.
