Abstract

Falls represent a common occurrence in the elderly population, and the risk itself increases significantly if the presence of depressive symptoms is found. The aim of the research is to examine the presence of depressive symptoms among the elderly population. The research sample was formed out of 142 persons (52.8% male and 47.2% female), who were divided into group A, who experienced a fall and group B, who did not experience a fall. The average age of the respondents was 73 years and 11 months (SD = 6 years and 2 months). The assessment of the depression was based on The Geriatric Depression Scale (Yesagava, 1983). Research results indicate that respondents who experienced a fall, on average, show significantly higher level of depression (p < 0.019) than the respondents who did experience a fall. Elderly persons prone to falls are more likely to show depressive symptoms than elderly persons who did not experience a fall. Determining the presence of depressive symptoms should be tak...en into account when assessing the risk of falls among the elderly population.
