Early Institutionilazation of children often leads to slowed growth, hormonal disbalance, difficulties in establishing affective relationships as well as delayed cognitive development. The goal of our research is to determine the level of development of executive functions in children and young adults without parental guidance and their peers who live in a familial environment. The research used the “BRIEF” instument to evaluate the development of executive functions in a natural environment, the version designed for parents. The sample included 48 subjects of high-school age that reside in institutions and familial environments, controlled for age and gender. Children raised in institutions fall behind their peers by a statistically non-trivial amount in every global scale- Global Executive score, Index of behavior regulation and Index of Metacognition. The institutionalized group shows no correlation between achievements on global scales and the age when the child entered the orphanage and time spent in it, nor between sex and achievements. The cause of the statistical difference between the two gropus of subjects could be the consequence of exhibiting existing limitations of institutionalized children, unsatisfactory familial surroundings before being admitted, or inadequately organized institutional surroundings that don’t sufficiently promote child development.sr
