(The Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment – IPPA).
There is an increasing number of cell phone users on a daily basis, both within population of people with typical development as well as within population of people with intellectual disability. Cell phones enable us with many benefits such are calling of other users and communicating via messages, additional apps and fun content. However, in certain cases there can be problematic uses of cell phones which manifest as excessive and inadequate use of cell phones. The main goal of the research is to determine differences in the use of mobile phones and in the level of problematic use of mobile phones by adolescents with intellectual disabilities and by typically developing adolescents. An additional goal of the research is to determine the relationship between problematic use of mobile phones and factors that may contribute to greater propensity to the problematic use of mobile phones by adolescents with intellectual disabilities and by typically developing adolescents – sociodemographic risk factors (gender and the level of parental education) and psychological risk factors (self-esteem, attachment to parents and peers and loneliness). The sample in our study consisted of 105 respondents of both sexes, aged from 12 to 18, divided into two groups. The first group consists of 50 adolescents with intellectual disabilities (47.6%) with an average age of 14.64 years, while the second group consists of 55 typically developing adolescents (52.4%) with an average age of 15.04 years. Differences in the use of mobile phones were examined by the Questionnaire on the use of mobile phones and the Internet, from which 11 questions were extricated for the purposes of the research. Problematic use of mobile phones was assessed by the adapted Mobile Phone Problematic Use Scale (MPPUS). The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) was used to assess the level of self-esteem of the respondents. The level of attachment to parents and peers was examined by The Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (IPPA). The Loneliness and Social Dissatisfaction Scale (LSDS) was used to assess the level of loneliness of the respondents. The results indicate differences in mobile phone use between adolescents with intellectual disabilities and typically developing adolescents. Adolescents with intellectual disabilities exhibit a higher level of problematic use of mobile phones compared to typically developing adolescents, although typically developing adolescents spend more time using a mobile phone. The corelation of a higher level of problematic use of mobile phones with a lower level of self-esteem and with a higher level of feelings of loneliness has been confirmed in adolescents with intellectual disabilities. Adolescents with intellectual disabilities did not differ at the level of problematic use of mobile phones by gender and by the level of parental education. The corelation of problematic use of mobile phones with the level of attachment to parents and peers has not been confirmed in adolescents with intellectual disabilities. Differences at the level of problematic use of mobile phones by gender were found in typically developing adolescents, as well as the corelation of a higher level of problematic use of mobile phones with a lower level of attachment to parents. Typically developing adolescents did not differ at the level of problematic use of mobile phones by the level of parental education. The corelation of problematic use of mobile phones with the level of self-esteem, with the level of peer attachment, and with the level of feelings of loneliness has not been confirmed in typically developing adolescents. Based on the obtained results, it can be assumed that psychological factors determine the differences in the level of problematic use of mobile phones between adolescents with intellectual disabilities and typically developing adolescents.sr
