Deca sa poremećajima autističkog spektra imaju signifikantne poteškoće u razvoju verbalnih i neverbalnih aspekata govornih sposobnosti, a samim tim i smanjene sposobnosti funkcionalne komunikacije. Deficit funkcionalne komunikacije često dovodi do korišćenja alternativnih, neadaptibilnih oblika ponašanja koji imaju komunikacionu funkciju – idiosinkratičkih oblika komunikacije i maladaptivnog ponašanja.
Children with autism spectrum disorders have significant difficulties in the development of verbal and non-verbal aspects of language abilities, and thus also reduced functional communication skills. The functional communication deficit often leads to the use of alternative, non-adaptable forms of behavior that have a communication function - idiosyncratic forms of communication and maladaptive behavior. Eliminating inadequate communication behaviors can be achieved by techniques of behavioral modification within the functional communication training, during which various alternative communication modalities are developed - verbal, gesturing, or assisted with the use of means of augmentative and alternative communication (communication using images or generated speech). The aim of this paper is to review relevant research dealing with the effectiveness of functional communication training and the application of assisted systems of augmentative and alternative communication, in particular the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) and the Speech Generating Devices (SGDs) in the development of functional communication in children with autism spectrum disorders. The survey was conducted by searching the index databases within the Consortium of the Libraries of Serbia for Integrated Search (KOBSON), and the only selection criteria was the age of the respondents to be up to 18 years, because the studies in this field were methodologically highly variable, with the dominance of case studies and studies on small samples, so methodological criteria were not crucial in the search. Several reviews and meta-studies are included in the analysis. The results indicate that functional communication training can be successful in developing functional forms of communication and decreasing the frequency of maladaptive behavior in the population of children with autism spectrum disorders. Also, the use of assisted systems of augmentative and alternative communication were proven successful in increasing the frequencies of spontaneous communication attempts, independent demands and the development of vocalization, as well as oral speech and some elemetates of social skills in the examined children. Additional research is needed to address the effects of motivation and preference of a certain system of augmentative and alternative communication on the quality of the outcome of functional communication training.sr
