The interest in cortical visual impairment (CVI) begins at the end of the nineteenth century with the concept of associating sight and occipital cortex functioning. The growing list of consequences of this disease can be seen as a relatively new phenomenon that researchers have been dealing with in the last couple of decades. Researchers are particularly interested in the functioning of children with cortical visual impairment in school setting, because there is still no answer to the question why these children have learning difficulties: due to developmental delays or visual impairment. Children with CVI often do not pay attention to visual stimuli; they tend to bring objects too close to their eyes and may have problems with recognizing people, forms and space. These children choose sense of touch as the primary means of exploring the world around them, although most of them have normal vision or minimum vision deviations. The aim of this paper is to describe and explain cortical visual impairment and the characteristics of children with this impairment
