Determination of the support needs index in persons with mental retardation

Abstract

Changes in standpoint of the society toward persons with intellectual disability in the last few decades generated the need to create a tool that measures the intensity of a person’s support needs. The objective of this article is to point out the possibility to determine support needs index, which is considered to be crucial prerequisite for creation of individualized support plans. As an example, we presented four participants with different levels of intellectual disability (mild, moderate, severe and profound) in order to determine their support needs index and support needs profile as well. Support intensity scale was used for generation of support needs index. The support needs for each of the 49 listed activities are examined with regard to three measures: frequency, daily support time, and type of support. Raw scores have been later converted to standardized scores, and the values of the support needs index were generated using appropriate tables. Determining the pattern and intensity of an individual’s support needs should be seen in the broader context of four-component planning process. .

Promene u stavovima društva prema osobama s mentalnom retardacijom koje su se dogodile u nekoliko poslednjih decenija uslovile su potrebu za kreiranjem instrumenta kojim se može meriti intenzitet potreba za podrškom. Cilj ovog rada je da ukaže na mogućnost utvrđivanja indeksa potreba za podrškom, što se smatra osnovnim preduslovom za kreiranje individualizovanih planova za pružanje podrške. Kao primer, prezentovali smo četiri ispitanika sa različitim stepenom mentalne retardacije (laka, umerena, teška i duboka) u nameri da utvrdimo njihov indeks potreba za podrškom, kao i profil potrebne podrške. Indeks potreba za podrškom utvrđen je primenom Skale za procenu intenziteta podrške. Potrebe za podrškom za svaki od 49 ajtema obuhvaćenih Skalom utvrđuju se na osnovu: učestalosti pružanja podrške, dnevnog utroška vremena za pružanje podrške i tipa podrške koja se pruža. Dobijeni sirovi skorovi zatim su konvertovani u standardne skorove, dok je vrednost indeksa potreba za podrškom utvrđena primenom odgovarajućih tabela. Određivanje profila i intenziteta potrebe za podrškom neke osobe treba sagledati unutar šireg konteksta četvorokomponentnog procesa planiranja. .
