The aim of this paper was to review the research evaluating the effects of the process of deinstitutionalization on both personal competencies of persons with intellectual disabilities and their quality of life. According to the results of the majority of included studies, the positive effects could be noticed in the most of the domains of adaptive skills and in relation to the indicators which assess quality of life of persons with intellectual disabilities. Process of deinstitutionalization has minimal positive impact on expression of different forms of challenging behavior in persons with intellectual disabilities, as well as on their health status, which especially refers to people at the severe end of spectrum and associated dual diagnosis. The main social factors which influence the impact of the process of deinstitutionalization are: attitudes of family members and relatives of persons with intellectual disabilities toward this idea, quality and distribution of network of specia...lized services of formal and informal social support, and objective conditions of alternative placement in a community.
