| sr |
dc.description.abstract | A significant number of children with autism spectrum disorder is nonverbal or minimal verbal. At the same time, the development of non-verbal communication patterns in these children is seriously undermined. Different, unconventional behaviors, including problematic ones, become the only way of communicating children with autistic spectrum disorders. Therefore, the development of functional communication skills is among the priorities in the early intervention process. The aim of this paper is to present the available and relevant researches whose subject relates to the use of functional communication training for the development and improvement of functional communication skills in children with autism spectrum disorder. Insight into the relevant literature was performed by reviewing electronic databases that are available through the Consortium of Serbian Library for Coordinated Acquisition (KOBSON). The review included empirical studies, review articles and meta-analyzes that examined the use of functional communication training in children with autism spectrum disorder, in which alternative communication responses were based on oral speech, the application of the Picture exchange communication system (PECS) and the speech/voice output generating devices (SGD / VOCA). The results of the study suggest that functional communication training is an effective behavioral technique for the development and improvement of functional communication skills, and indirectly, elimination of problematic behavior in children with autism spectrum disorder. However, other nonconventional, idiosyncratic forms of behavior which, by definition, do not belong to the order of problematic, can be effectively treated with the use of functional communication training. The positive influence of training on the development of functional communication is found in research in which alternative communication responses implied oral speech, as well as the application of the system of augmentative and alternative communication. The requesting is the most often treated pragmatic function during functional communication training, but other communication functions can also be successfully developed. | sr |
