Regressive phenomena in autism

Abstract

The occurrence of developmental regression in autism is one of the most puzzling features of these pervasive developmental disorders. It is well known that in some cases of so-called regressive autism deterioration of communicative, cognitive and social functions usually occurs in the second year of life, after period of normal postnatal development. Although natural developmental trajectory of autistic disorder is characterized by continual increase in communication and social abilities, more than 20% of the adolescents with autism experience marked deterioration, possibly due to the seizures or comorbid psychiatric disorders. However, in the majority of the cases it is still not known why the regression occurs. In the future research one should determine the possible role of a broader autistic phenotype as well as environmental influences on regressive phenomena in autism.

Pojava razvojne regresije predstavlja jednu od najzagonetnijih karakteristika pervazivnih poremećaja razvoja. Dobro je poznato da u nekim slučajevima takozvanog regresivnog autizma dolazi do deterioracije komunikacionih, kognitivnih i socijalnih funkcija, obično u drugoj godini života, posle perioda normalnog postnatalnog razvoja. Iako prirodnu razvojnu trajektoriju autizma karakteriše postepeni razvoj komunikacionih i socijalnih sposobnosti, kod više od 20% adolescenata sa autizmom dolazi do značajne deterioracije, verovatno zbog pojave epileptičnih napada i psihijatrijskih poremećaja. Međutim, u najvećem broju slučajeva razlozi regresije nisu poznati. U budućim istraživanjima potrebno je utvrditi moguću ulogu šireg autističnog fenotipa, kao i sredinskih uticaja u pojavi regresivnih fenomena u autizmu.
