Positive effects of television content on emotional and social behavior of children

Abstract

For decades, the dominance of studies with various aspects of the negative impact of television content as their subject of interest is evident in the field of theoretical and empirical analysis of the impact of television content on the development of children and youth, while the consideration of positive impact was mostly beyond the systematic interest of scientists and researchers. Even though the general assessment is that viewing prosocial television content may result in positive changes in social and emotional behavior of young people, research studies committed to the positive effects of television content on emotional and social behavior of children are scarce and insufficiently perceive the character and nature of the impact of television on the development of emotions and prosocial behavior during childhood. Based on the critical review of the findings of a number of foreign empirical studies, this article summarizes the research evidence of the positive effects of television content on emotional empathy, altruism, learning about emotions, social interaction and acceptance of diversity, with presentation of conclusions about potential mediator factors that may interact with the influences of television portrayals.

U oblasti teorijske i istraživačke analize uticaja televizijskih sadržaja na razvoj dece i omladine evidentna je, decenijama unazad, dominacija studija koje za predmet interesovanja imaju različite aspekte negativnih efekata televizije, dok je razmatranje pozitivnih uticaja uglavnom bilo izvan sistematskog interesovanja naučnika i istraživača. Iako je generalni nalaz da gledanje prosocijalnih televizijskih sadržaja može rezultirati pozitivnim promenama u socijalnom i emocionalnom ponašanju mladih osoba, istraživačke studije posvećene pozitivnim efektima televizijskih sadržaja na emocionalno i socijalno ponašanje dece su malobrojne i u nedovoljnoj meri sagledavaju karakter i prirodu uticaja televizije na razvoj emocija i prosocijalnog ponašanja u periodu detinjstva. Na osnovu kritičkog pregleda nalaza jednog broja inostranih empirijskih studija, u radu su sumirane istraživačke potvrde o pozitivnim efektima televizijskih sadržaja na empatiju, altruizam, učenje emocija, socijalnu interakciju i prihvatanje različitosti, uz izvođenje zaključaka o potencijalnim medijatornim faktorima koji mogu biti u interakciji sa uticajima televizijskih prikaza.
