The subject of this study is to examine the effects of movement and dance in rehabilitation and resocialization of past offenders. Other works, up to this date, point to positive effects and changes brought on by movement and dance therapy. The intent and goal of this work is to explore both the international experiences of others, as well as the philosophy of interconnectedness of the body and spirit, the latter being the basis of movement and dance therapy. It is also the intent of the study to examine the therapy’s current use in Serbia, and to review the use of rehabilitation and resocialization methods concerning working with offenders.
The main assumption is based on the idea that movement and dance therapy can bring positive changes in an offender’s behavior and allow them to change their existing habits, as well as contribute to adopting new, healthier ones. Parts of this work include other target groups which do not apply these methods of therapy, or where that application is... inadequate (people with autism, Parkinson’s disease, depression, and anxiety). The primary goal of this work is to familiarize others with movement and dance therapy, and introduce them to its possibilities and applications.
The importance of this work reflects on pointing out the lack of information and knowledge in Southeastern Europe. The topic of movement and dance therapy is rarely discussed in the Balkans, both in theory and in practice. Another goal is to introduce the general population to this type of therapy and the benefits of its use, as well as to ensure a place for movement and dance therapy in research and practical applications.
Other examples have shown that this type of therapy can be successful. By researching other works on this topic, as well as writing new ones, and examining best practice examples from other countries, it is possible to measure achievements and work methods in Serbia. The next goal is to answer the questions concerning how the therapy can be put into practice, what it would change, what it would contribute to, and most importantly – how resources would be found and allocated for implementation and execution.
The sample in this study consists of 204 respondents. Because of the inability of completing this study with an ideal target population, it was decided that the sample would be random, with one control group. Research has shown that movement and dance have an important, positive role.
Positive changes are seen in variables such as energy, depression, and general health.
It is the wish of the author that this study be the starting basis for future studies on the subject of new forms of treatment, rehabilitation and resocialization of offenders and other target populations that could benefit from this type of treatment.
