This paper presents the results of a research which examines the developmental phases of certain elements of phonological awareness and its influence on the writing ability. The goal of this research was to determine the frequency of dysgraphia in third- and fourth-grade children, to determine whether dysgraphia is more frequent in boys in comparison to girls, as well as the achievement of children with graphic-motor dysgraphia and typically developed children in the Phonological Awareness Test. Dysgraphic Handwriting Assessment Scale was used for the assessment of dysgraphic handwriting, whereas for the assessment of phonological awareness the FONT Test was used, covering the following eight types of tasks: connecting the syllables, segmenting words into syllables, identifying the initial phoneme, rhyme recognition, phonemic segmentation, identification of the last phoneme, elimination of phonemes, substitution of phonemes. Research sample consists of 202 third- and fourth-grade eleme...ntary schoolchildren (111 boys and 91 girls). The results show that dysgraphic handwriting is present in 28 third- and fourth-grade children (graphic-motor dysgraphia is found in 19 children, and language-based dysgraphia in 9 children). The results also imply that graphic-motor dysgraphia and language-based dysgraphia are more frequent in boys than girls. Another significant discovery is that children with properly developed handwriting perform better in the Phonological Awareness Test than children with graphic-motor dysgraphia, except for the tasks of connecting the syllables and rhyme recognition where their achievement was consistent. On the other hand, the achievement of children with language-based dysgraphia and children with properly developed handwriting was identical only in the task of connecting the syllables.
