The role of sensory observation is very important for the proper development of the language of students with hearing impaired. To successfully master all phases of speech development and proper speech, it is necessary to have certain conditions and possibilities.
Development of the dictionary is the most obvious indicator of the adoption of languages in children (Kristal, 1996). In children with normal development of verbal communication skills, very rapid semantic development is observed. However, certain differences in the dynamics of adopting an active and passive vocabulary in children have been identified.
These two dictionaries touch each other, but they are not the same. Since childhood, the dictionary of understanding and recognizing words is much larger than the active vocabulary.
Children understand a much larger number of words, which they do not use in their active speech. Therefore, at the earliest age of developing children's vocabulary, books and booklets are useful ...in which the words that are most commonly spoken in the speech should be represented. Later, in teaching, the pedagogue often uses illustrated materials. The essence of the illustration is that objects are not represented in the same way as with all the qualities but only what is characteristic. Showing this method is very economical and represents a significant feature of modern teaching.
The aim of this research was to determine significance of illustration in language development in the deaf and the hard of hearing elementary school students The research was conducted on sample of 30 students from third to eighth grade who attend school for the hearing impaired children in Serbia.
The instrument we used is the "Street" test (D. Kostic).
The obtained results showed that age is increasing with success in naming terms and recognizing them, the level of hearing impairment has a partial impact the success, while the grade significantly influences the success of the students. Results showed the difference between the genders, and that for the benefit of the girls. They were more successful than boys, both in active and passive vocabulary.
