Profile – Caregiver Questionnaire; Dunn, 1999).
In early childhood the child's life is reduced to the functioning of the sensomotor apparatus.
Sensory processing that involves multisensory integration and sensory modulation is the basis of psychological and social functioning in the first years of life, as well as gnostic, cognitive and adaptive development later in life. Sensory integration, that is, the integration of information of individual sensory modes is the basis of perceptual experience and is necessary for organizing a meaningful answer. Sensory integration difficulties are expressed as a decreased or increased sensitivity to sensory information, and are manifested through hyperreactivity or hyporeactivity to sensory stimulation. Previous research has shown that the difficulties of sensory integration are more frequent in people with intellectual disability (hereinafter referred to as ID) in relation to persons of the typical population (hereinafter TP).
The research presented in this paper was conducted in order to det...ermine the differences in sensory integration between children with ID and children from TP, as well as the influence of the ID level and age of the respondents on these differences. The severity of ID is assessed by applying the DSM-5 classification criteria that involves testing conceptual, social and practical adaptive skills. The sensory function profile was determined using the Sensory Profile - Caregiver Questionnaire (Dunn, 1999).
Results of this study showed that children with ID exhibit more difficulties in sensory integration in all sensory modalities compared to their peers from TP. A positive correlation between sensory integration difficulties and the degree of ID was also found. The influence of age on sensory integration difficulties was not found in children with ID nor in TP subjects.
