The human need for understanding and conversation has created various means of communication that have been perfected throughout time to the level they are at today. Spoken language is the most complex, the most appropriate and the finest vehicle for expression that has an acoustic and written form. The overall progress of the child also depends on the language development.
The sense of hearing is very important for enabling speech and communication, which is a necessary condition for the intellectual, emotional and social development of a person.
Sign language is a language that deaf children spontaneously learn, just as hearing children absorb the spoken language of their environment. Sign language has an indispensable role in the development of the language and personality of deaf and hard of hearing children of school age.
Sign language is a stimulus for the development and improvement of verbal language ability and plays a major role in the acquisition of school knowledge.
Ser...bian Sign Language (SZJ) serves deaf people in Serbia as a instrument of everyday communication, for expressing wishes, needs, attitudes and emotions. In Serbia, there is a high degree of understanding among deaf people within the SZJ, although there is also the possibility of regional variations of certain gestures and ways of expression.
The subject of this paper is the particular features of sign language in teaching in schools for deaf and hard of hearing children. The aim of this paper is to point out the importance of sign language in school learning and its influence on the overall personality development of a deaf child.
In this paper, a descriptive method was used, which is based on the literature of experts specialized in the field of hearing impairment and education of deaf and hard of hearing children.
