Stuttering is a fluency disorder in which the normal rhythm and tempo of speech is disrupted by frequent pauses, blockages, hesitations, impaired speech breathing, prolongation of sounds, repetition of sound, syllables, words and phrases, etc. These symptoms are usually accompanied by spasm of the speech organs (clones or tones, as well as their combination) with the appearance of accompanying contractions of different muscle groups, especially in the facial region (tics).
Stuttering, as the most common speech fluency disorder, affects approximately 5% of children and 1% of adults. Fluency disorder most often occurs before the age of three. At this age, there is an accelerated development of language functions, which is accompanied by grammatical combination of words in order to express linguistic opinion. Due to the complex nature of speech production, the clear etiology of stuttering has not yet been fully elucidated and therefore stuttering can be considered a multifactorial disord...er. When assessing, it is first necessary to determine the degree of disfluency as well as the type of speech interruptions in order to have an insight into how advanced the disorder is. The complete assessment also includes an assessment of motor and auditory abilities as well as a screening test to assess the language abilities of children / adults.
Since the treatment process itself is long and continuous, motivation is often an important prerequisite for successful speech therapy so that it can be treated and controlled.
