The value of reading in the life of a modern man is priceless. Due to the communication barrier that deaf and hard of hearing people encounter, reading get even more significant role in their everyday life. Reading offers plenty of opportunity for obtaining information otherwise impossible to get through auditory mechanisms. This way reading becomes a method of communication, a way of learning, but also an important element that contributes a great deal to their speech and language development. However, the potential of the reading isn’t often fully exploited. The poorly developed speech and the poor language experience reflect badly on the quality of reading as well. The aim of this research was to look into the reading characteristics of deaf and hard of hearing children. The aim of this research was to look into the particular problems deaf and hard of hearing encounter when reading and writing. We also wanted to examine the quality of reading and reading comprehension and to pinpoint the types of mistakes the children made. We were interested in finding out whether and to what extent the quality of reading may depend on the age, the level of hearing loss, the grade in Serbian language and the sex. The research was carried out in December, 2010 in the classes of hearing impaired children in two elementary schools in Novi Sad and Belgrade. A total of 30 deaf and hard of hearing children were examined, together with two girls attending regular schools. The results of study show the low quality of reading and reading comprehension by deaf and hard of hearing children. The research has indicated that the age, the hearing loss and sex have partial influence on some elements of reading.sr
