Social-political values in the tradition of Serbian endowment practice

Abstract

The basic aim of the present article is to indicate the historical context of endowment tradition in Serbia, explain the connection between the basic social-political values and practice of endowment and give critical account of the connection between the crisis of social values of the Serbian society and the possibility to revive the practice of endowment. Endowment is founded on a number of social-political value bases such as solidarity, humanism, philanthropy, mercy, charity, enlightenment, social-economic development. Revival of endowment is of great importance for the Serbian society: ethical, national, educational, cultural, social-political. However, there are numerous impediments preventing endowment practice: historically ideological, value, political, economical and legal. The revival of the practice of endowment is tied also to the processes of restitution and denationalization for a great number of endowment funds (property-real estate) was confiscated and nationalized after World War II. Rehabilitation of the practice of endowment in the Serbian people is hardly achievable without change of public consciousness, system of values and normative framework.

Osnovni cilj ovog rada je da ukaže na istorijski kontekst tradicije zadužbinarstva u Srbiji, da objasni vezu između osnovnih socijalno-političkih vrednosti i zadužbinarstva i da kritički ukaže na vezu između krize društvenih vrednosti srpskog društva i mogućnosti oživljavanja zadužbinarstva. Zadužbinarstvo je utemeljeno na više socijalno-političkih vrednosnih osnova kao što su solidarnost, humanizam, filantropija, milosrđe, dobročinstvo, prosvetiteljstvo, socijalno-ekonomski razvoj. Oživljavanje zadužbinarstva ima širok značaj za srpsko društvo: moralni, nacionalni, prosvetni, kulturni, naučni, socijalno-politički. Međutim, oživljavanje zadužbinarstva sprečavaju brojne barijere: istorijsko-ideološke, vrednosne, političke, ekonomske i pravne prirode. Obnova zadužbinarstva je u neraskidivoj vezi i sa procesima restitucije i denacionalizacije, jer je veliki broj zadužbina posle Drugog svetskog rata konfiskovan i nacionalizovan. Rehabilitacija zadužbinarstva u srpskom narodu je teško ostvariva bez promena u javnoj svesti sistemu vrednosti normativnim okvirima.
