Characteristics of peer relations of children with mild intellectual disability in educational setting
Osobenost vršnjačkih odnosa u uslovima edukacije kod dece s lakom intelektualnom ometenošću
The aim of the research was to define the characteristics of peer relations among children with mild intellectual disability (MID) and to identify the features which are statistically significantly related to general academic attainment. The main purpose of the research was related to the need for defining peer relations in the population of children with reduced intellectual capabilities, regarding the fact that the majority of research aim at assessing peer relations between children of typical development and MID children. Thirty three MID students, aged 8-12, were tested by the Peer Problems Scale taken from the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. Our results show high correlation between general academic attainment and the quality of peer relations among MID children. It was also found that more than half of the students in the sample had peer interactions of high quality, most of them had best friends and were liked by other children. The conclusion drawn from the research ...considers some practical implications related to the need for designing a programme for stimulating desirable forms of behavior of MID students. These desirable forms of behavior should be encouraged by all parties: parents, teachers, and children.
