Sociometry is based on assurance that the understanding of group membership and individual position within the group is related to attraction and rejection between members of the group. It represents both an idea and a technique which enable the researchers to consider the dynamics of the groups, as well as the method to develop measures, not only of groups by itself but also the individuals belonging to the group. Basic principle of sociometric method is belief that each member of the group has the capacity to evaluate all other members based on one or more criteria. In this paper sociometric techniques intended for collecting the data on peer relations, such as peer nominations, ranking and rating scale, are investigated in the light of their advantages and disadvantages, in order to perceive the optimal technique for use in special education, regardless whether they are used in research or practice.
