Self-regulation represents an ability to inhibit rapid, nonflexible automatized response aimed at the realization of momentary satisfaction, in order to generate a slower but more flexible response, which has a greater adaptive value since it is aimed at long-term objectives. Delay gratification task, as one of the means of self-regulation assessment, represents a choice between a minor reward that is available to the subject at any moment during the test and a major reward to be granted if the subject succeeds to delay the acceptance of a minor reward in the anticipated time period. Various abilities are involved in delay gratification tasks: attention, working memory, inhibitory control, mental representation, emotion regulation, as well as strategies which include the use of speech. The objective of this paper is to provide a more comprehensive illustration of executive functions, intelligence and self-regulation in delay gratification tasks in individuals with intellectual disability (ID). According to the results of analyzed researches, it can be concluded that deficits in the field of executive functions represent a basis for limited success of ID examinees compared to typically developing subjects of the same mental age, with regard to their effect on delay gratification tasks.
