People that have lived through a traumatic amputation often encounter severe depression as a result of a distorted self-image and fear for social rejection. Additionally, phantom pains force the amputee to take strong painkillers and thus complicate a return to the labour market. Over the last few years there were just a few types of hand prostheses on the market. Most of these prostheses have very simple functions like opening and closing the hand, and none of them possess a system for conscious sensory feedback. Recent development in the field of material sciences, nanobiotechnologies, cognitive neuroscience and information technologies makes possible an intelligent artificial hand displaying most of the basic features of a real human hand. The new generation of bionic hand will have more advanced functions like: several various grip functions, separate finger movements and sensory functions which will help to regulate the grip power. In addition, thought control would be possible using ElectroMyoGraphic (EMG) signals that are recorded by surface electrodes of prosthesis and transmitted to the motor in the artificial hand. Furthermore, the latest research in the field of cognitive neuroscience promises a bionic hand that will be perceived as a true part of the body by simply tricking the brain using so-called “rubber hand illusion”. The functional new generation of artificial hand could be of great importance in rehabilitation of disabled amputees, helping them to restore self-image and social acceptance or even to bring them back to work.
