AB - Speech and language development involves a number of developmental phases through which all children go through. Transition into the next phase is conditioned by successful mastering of the preceding phase. Adoption of vocals of the native tongue takes places parallel to vocabulary development. Auditory deprivation in deaf and hard of hearing children results in difficulties with language and speech adoption in all phases of development. The aim of this paper was to evaluate the lexical-semantic abilities of deaf and hard of hearing children of preschool age. The sample consisted of 46 deaf and hard of hearing pupils enrolled in grades four to eight of elementary school (37 with conventional hearing aids and 9 with cochlear implants). The instrument utilized in our evaluation of lexical-semantic abilities in deaf and hard of hearing children in elementary school was the Test for evaluating the level of speech development (Smiljka Vasic). The test consists of two sections The first section is a definition test, which consists of five of the most frequent nouns of the Serbian language taken from 'The Children's Dictionary' by Vera Lukic - man, mother, life, house and sun. The second part of the test is a test of contrasting adjectives, which consists of for adjectives which are on the list of the top 50 most frequent ones in the Serbian language (large, good, black and free). These four adjectives should be a part the vocabulary of all children before the age of three, thus it is assumed that they are known to the children. The acquired results show that there exists a difference in the lexical- semantic abilities of pupils with a cochlear implant and those with hearing aids. In the first part of the test, the definition test, pupils with hearing aids had the most wrong and echolalic responses. Functional definitions were most dominant in the group of pupils with cochlear implants and those with hearing aids, as well . On the second part of the test, the test of contrasting adjectives, the pupils with cochlear implants had more correct responses (on average 2 . 44) and they showed better results in comparison with the pupils with hearing aids, who on average had 1.54 correct responses.

In the development of speech and language in deaf and hard of hearing

development, due to inadequate reception of spoken information.
The aim of this paper was to evaluate the characteristics of
sentences, i.e. the level of expression in deaf and hard of hearing
children attending elementary school.
Within the scope of the study the Test for Evaluating Linguistic
Productions – strip situation (M. Milenkovic, I. Ivic, R. Rosandic, V.

The obtained results show that pupils with cochlear implants had
better results in comparison to the pupils with hearing aids, although
without statistical significance. Pupils with cochlear implants
most often expressed themselves at the level of complex sentences,
whilst pupils with hearing aids most often express themselves using
compound sentences.

AB - In the period from birth to one year of age significant changes take place in the domain of speech and language, that is, there is great development in a child’s articulation of vocals. The development of speech and language in deaf and hard of hearing children is ensued by a series of deviations from spontaneous development. Difficulties which emerge in the adoption of speech as a result of inadequate auditory input are manifested in both the language and speech of the deaf and hard of hearing. Mastering of the vocal system of a native tongue is a necessary precondition for further development of language and speech. The aim of this paper was to evaluate the articulation of vocals of the Serbian language in isolated words and sentences in deaf and hard of hearing children of elementary school age, who wore a hearing aid or cochlear implant. The sample consisted of 46 deaf and hard of hearing pupils, enrolled in grades four to eight of elementary school (37 with hearing aids and 9 with cochlear implants). The instruments utilized in this study were two segments of the List for evaluating articulations in isolated words and sentences (N. Dimic). The list consists of 30 words which include all vocals of the Serbian language in their initial position. When enouncing the voices in isolated sentences the pupils were required to, based on a given picture, enounce its title or to repeat a given word, given / spoken by the examiner. Whence articulating voices in sentences the pupils were required to read eleven sentences in which words from the articulation list were found. The obtained results show that there exist certain specificities in the articulation of deaf and hard of hearing children with hearing aids and cochlear implants in isolated words and sentences. Pupils with cochlear implants obtained better results in comparison with the pupils with hearing aids.

AB - Hearing impairment at an early age leaves negative repercussions on the development of speech and language. Those consequences greatly depend on the level of hearing impairment. Greater and more serious impairments have more significant implications. The development of speech and language in deaf and hard of hearing children is very significant within the re-habilitation period, which takes place throughout the duration of their primary and high school years. During this time the children develop articulation of vocals of their native language, they develop an active and passive vocabulary, adopt grammar and grammar rules of their native language, etc. Due to inadequate proficiency and inadequate utilization of grammar rules, in the speech of deaf and hard of hearing children there is often the problem of agrammatisms, as found by studies completed by both domestic and foreign authors. In the speech of deaf and hard of hearing individuals verbs are after nouns the most utilized type of word. During speech development, deaf and hard of hearing children, often make mistakes in their use of verbs. They tend to use the wrong grammatical categories of entities, numbers and gender. Also, in deaf and hard of hearing children the identification of the grammatical category of tense (time) is quite difficult. During their primary school years pupils should adopt and master the grammar of their native tongue. The aim of this paper was to evaluate the use of basic verb tenses (perfect, present and future) by deaf and hard of hearing high school students. The study utilized the Corpus for the assessment of the use of basic verb tenses (N.Dimic). The test encompasses 20 sentences and the students are required to conjugate the verb found in the infinitive into the applicable form, whilst considering the grammatical categories of time, entities, gender and numbers. All of the results will be presented in tabular and graphical form. The paper gives conclusions which point to certain (in)abilities of deaf and hard of hearing children to use appropriate verb tenses in their everyday language.
AB - Oštećenje sluha na ranom uzrastu kod dece ostavlja negativne posledice na razvoj govora i jezika. U zavisnosti od stepena oštećenja sluha, zavisiće i posledice koje ono prouzrokuje. Teža i veća oštećenja prouzrokuju i veće posledice. Razvoj govora i jezika kod gluve i nagluve dece je veoma značajan u toku re/ habilitacionog perioda, osnovnoškolskog i srednjoškolskog obrazovanja. U toku tih perioda kod dece se razvija artikulacija glasova maternjeg jezika, razvoj aktivnog i pasivnog rečnika, usvajanje gramatike i gramatičkih pravila maternjeg jezika. Zbog nedovoljnog ovladavanja i neadekvatne upotrebe gramatičkih pravila, u govoru gluvih i nagluvih često dolazi do agramatizma, što potvrđuju istraživanja domaćih i inostranih autora. U govoru gluvih i nagluvih glagoli su nakon imenica najzastupljenije vrste reči. Tokom razvoja govora, gluvi i nagluvi učenici, često greše prilikom upotrebe glagola. Dolazi do pogrešne upotrebe gramatičkih kategorija lica, roda i broja. Svi rezultati biće prikazani grafički i tabelarno. Na kraju rada su izvedeni zaključci koji ukazuju na određene (ne)mogućnosti gluvih i nagluvih učenika da u svom svakodnevnom jeziku upotrebljavaju glagole u odgovarajućim vremenima. .
