AB - Purpose: Aphasia has a negative impact on a person’s quality of life (QOL). The Stroke Aphasia Quality of Life-39 scale (SAQOL-39) is a widely-used measure of health-related quality of life (HRQOL) developed for people with aphasia that has been translated into several languages. Its psychometric properties have been examined not only in English, but also in other languages. This study examined the reliability and validity of a translation and adaptation of the SAQOL-39 into Serbian in Serbian-speaking people with aphasia.Method: Using forward and backward translation, the SAQOL-39 was translated and adapted from English into Serbian and its psychometric properties were examined in 90 Serbian-speaking people with a broad range of times post-onset of aphasia. Internal consistency, test–retest reliability and other analyses were conducted.Result: Internal consistency and test–retest reliability of the Serbian version was high (Cronbach’s α > 0.9; ICC ≥0.87), which is similar to versions of the scale in other languages. Conclusion: The Serbian translation and adaptation of the SAQOL-39 was shown to be a valid and reliable measure of QOL in people with aphasia with reliable psychometric properties and is suitable for the assessment of Serbian people with aphasia.

AB - A paraphasia is a symptom of aphasia in which an intended or targeted word is substituted for
an incorrect word. Praphasias are produced unintentionally and are more typical for patients
whose speech is uttered fluently. The major types of paraphasia are the phonemic, verbal,
and neologistic. This study examines the occurrence and types of paraphasias in speakers with
fluent and non-fluent aphasia. In addition, we wanted to explore the influence of language tasks
on occurrence of paraphasia.

AB - Since the executive functions allow a person to successfully perform cognitive activities, including the
production and understanding of language, there is an increasing awareness of the need for the research
the relationship between executive functions and language disorders. In view of this, the number of
studies focused on testing executive functions in aphasia has been published. Symptoms of the
impairment of executive functions are described in different type of aphasia, but the nature of these
disorders is still unexplored. In this paper, we have examined the executive functions in patients with

Extending knowledge of the public awareness of aphasia in the Balkans: Serbia and Montenegro

AB - Purpose: Public awareness of aphasia has been surveyed in a number of countries revealing that it is universally low. We report results of surveys in the Balkan countries Serbia and Montenegro and compare results with data from Croatia and Slovenia. Methods: Convenience surveys of the general public were conducted in public places like shopping centers/malls and parks in Serbia (N=400) and Montenegro (N=500) using an adapted version of the public awareness of aphasia survey questionnaire. Respondents were asked whether they have heard of aphasia and tested with questions about aphasia. Information on gender, age, occupation and education was recorded. Outcomes: Twelve percent (Serbia) and 11% (Montenegro) had heard of aphasia, but just 4% (Serbia) and 3.2% (Montenegro) had a basic knowledge of aphasia. Age, gender and occupation interacted variably with awareness. Between 16% (Slovenia) and 60% (Croatia) said they had heard of aphasia (10.5% overall mean for the four countries) and basic knowledge of aphasia across the four countries ranged between 3.2 and 7%. Conclusions: Levels of awareness of aphasia in the Balkans are low and variably associated with age, gender, socio-economic and educational levels. Respondents with some knowledge of aphasia gained it through personal or professional interaction with aphasia or the media. The data provide a basis for awareness raising in Balkan countries to reduce stigmatization, improve community access and understanding. Implications for rehabilitation Awareness of aphasia is low universally, even among healthcare workers. Low public awareness of a condition, like aphasia, results in under-funded research and service provision. In order to raise public awareness of aphasia we need to know how many members of the general public know about it. Improvements in public awareness could positively affect funding, the quality of services, and the public understanding and acceptance of individuals with aphasia in the community. Improving awareness of aphasia in those who come into contact with aphasic people, like healthcare workers, could significantly improve the healthcare experience of people with aphasia and their families.

Improving awareness of aphasia in those who come into contact with aphasic people, like healthcare workers, could significantly improve the healthcare experience of people with aphasia and their families.",

AB - This study examined patterns of acquired dyslexia in Serbian aphasic speakers, comparing profiles of groups with Broca's versus Wernicke's aphasia. The study also looked at the relationship of reading and auditory comprehension and between reading comprehension and reading aloud in these groups. Participants were 20 people with Broca's and 20 with Wernicke's aphasia. They were asked to read aloud and to understand written material from the Serbian adaptation of the Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination. A Serbian Word Reading Aloud Test was also used. The people with Broca's aphasia achieved better results in reading aloud and in reading comprehension than those with Wernicke's aphasia. Those with Wernicke's aphasia showed significantly more semantic errors than those with Broca's aphasia who had significantly more morphological and phonological errors. From the data we inferred that lesion sites accorded with previous work on networks associated with Broca's and Wernicke's aphasia and with a posterior-anterior axis for reading processes centred on (left) parietal-temporal-frontal lobes.

Ispitivanje tehnikom slobodnih
asocijacija reči omogućava uvid u leksičku, semantičku i gramatičku
obe grupe ispitanika.
AB - The term words association implies relation between two or more words produced
according to associative laws. Analysis with technique of free words association provides
an insight into lexical, semantic and grammatical structure of language, and with
comparison of word associations characteristics between individuals of different ages,
an insight into the process of adopting the language structure and level of language
development. Most studies on language skills in blind children are focused on the
question of the influence of visual impairment on delay or deviation in development of
speech and language functions.
The aim of this study was to compare the characteristics of free word associations
in children with visual impairment and children with typical development. The sample
was consisted of students of both genders, from first to eighth grade, 68 students
with visual impairment of "VeljkoRamadanovic” school from Zemun, and 141 students
with typical development of primary school "Ivan Gundulic” from Novi Beograd. Kent-
Rozanoff’s free word association test, which was adapted to Serbian speaking area, was
applied in this research. For statistical analysis we used χ2 test and t-test.
The answers were categorized as paradigmatic and non paradigmatic, and then,
their frequency related to school age and gender was further analyzed for both
group of respondents. It was also compared the frequency of paradigmatic and non
paradigmatic answers in students with visual impairment and students with typical
development.
Results have shown that students of all ages, with visual impairment as well as
students without visual impairment, produce significantly more paradigmatic answers
compared to non paradigmatic and syntagmatic answers. It was also found that
students with visual impairment provide significantly more paradigmatic answers
compared to students without visual impairment.

AB - Specific language impairment belongs to a group of developmental disorders with specific pathological patterns, which do not occur in any stage of a typical language development. It occurs in children with relatively intact social development, proper hearing, preserved intellectual and emotional abilities. This paper presents the results of the syntactic abilities in children with specific language impairment and non-specific changes in electroencephalographic activities (EEG) compared with children who have specific language disorders and normal EEG findings. The sample consisted of forty children, aged between 5 and 7, with specific developmental language impairment, undergoing speech-language therapy. The examinees were divided into two groups according to EEG findings. The first group included 20 children with language disorders who had non-specific changes in EEG activity and the other group comprised 20 children with language disorders and normal EEG findings. The test “The evaluation of individual components dysphasic syntax” was used. The results showed that there are differences in syntactic abilities among testing groups of children.

AB - Cerebral palsy is almost always accompanied by speech disorders, which are manifested at an early age as delayed speech, while in the case of definitive clinical forms, they are manifested as different types of speech disorders. Speech disorders are associated with neuromuscular deficits, sensory impairments, intellectual disability, lack of verbal stimulation or limited verbal stimulation during early period of childhood. This study presents the characteristics of speech disorders in youth with cerebral palsy. We analyzed the quality of articulation, voice quality and speech intelligibility. Results have shown that speech disorders are in correlation with the type of cerebral palsy.

AB - This paper presents the results of testing the psychometric properties and clinical significance of Serbian aphasia screening test. The sample consisted of 36 adult patients with speech and language impairment caused by the damage of the left hemisphere, representing clinical (experimental) group. Participants in the clinical group were divided into two groups according to the time of testing: the first group consisted of 21 patients with acute brain damage; the second group consisted of 16 patients with the chronic form of aphasia. Out of the total number of participants in clinical groups, 20 participants were diagnosed with one of the classic types of aphasia, using Boston diagnostic aphasia examination battery, while 16 patients had symptoms that did not correspond to any known aphasic syndrome. The control group consisted of 36 healthy participants. All participants, both in clinical and control group, were subjected to testing with Screening test for aphasia (STA). The results showed that STA represents a valid measuring instrument for detecting language impairment in persons with brain damage. The validity of the test was observed in acute and chronic phase of aphasia. Additionally, it was observed that the test is valid for monitoring the recovery of language abilities. It was concluded that STA has a good potential for measuring language impairment that must be examined in a larger sample for the purpose of test standardization.

AB - Despite the possible psychopathology of puberphonia, the results of voice
therapy are excellent. Most patients are highly motivated to achieve an appropriate
post-pubertal voice because they have been made painfully aware of the social and
career disadvantages of the unbroken voice. Treatment is unlikely to be successful
if the individual has no real desire to change the voice but has responded to the
pressure of others who think that treatment should be sought. Normal laryngeal
growth and length of vocal folds ensure that mature male voice can be produced as
long as the patient is cooperative.
The study included 30 patients with puberophonia of 12-17 years of age.
Voice therapy was evaluated by analyzing acoustic parameters of voice, using
computerized laboratory “Kay Elemetrics”. The voices were recorded before and
after the Voice therapy. Signal, noise and tremor parameters were processed. The
methods of descriptive and analytical statistics were applied.
The results of the study suggest a causal relationship between voice
therapy and voice quality of patients.

AB - Although the naming disorders given much attention in clinical practice, the researchers still search for effective approaches to the treatment and understanding nature of word-finding deficits in the aphasics. This paper presents the results of the phonological and semantic strategies on the capabilities of the naming in patients with Broca's and in patients Wernicke's aphasia. The results showed that phonological strategy contributes to the increasing capabilities in patients with Broca's aphasia, while in the patients with Wernicke's aphasia, the semantic strategy have a greater effect than phonological strategy. .

AB - The aim of this study was to determine the syntactic abilities of youth with disorders in language development, compared to youth with typical development. The sample consisted of 77 respondents, from the fifth through the eighth grade, in the developmental stage of early adolescence. The Test on the ability of describing pictures was used for the assessment of syntactic abilities. The results showed that young people with speech and language development disorders have less developed syntactic abilities in comparison with youth with typical development. At the same time, a correlation in achievement on the Test of Syntactic Skills and a grade in the school subject Serbian Language and Literature was showed.

pacijenata u cilju potpunijeg sagledavanja neurolingvističkih aspekata
agrafije.
oblasti mozga.
AB - Neurolinguistic analysis of agraphia is presented in this paper. The
Sample consisted of 40 aphasic patients of vascular etiology. Aphasia
was diagnosed by means of Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination
(BDAE). Focal brain lesion was determined by CT and MRI. The BDAE
writing subtest was used in the assessment of writing ability. The
obtained results show that agraphia appeared in all types of aphasic
syndromes. Writing disorders are more prominent in non-fluent
aphasias compared to fluent types of aphasia. The results also indicate
that literal paragraphia is more frequent in non-fluent aphasias, while,
semantic paragraphia is typical of fluent forms of aphasias. It could
be concluded that the patterns of writing errors caused by lesions of
anterior parts of the brain are different from writing disorders which
are manifested in lesions of posterior parts of the brain.

AB - Phonation is a fundamental feature of human communication. Control of phonation in the context of speech-language disturbances has traditionally been considered a characteristic of lesions to subcortical structures and pathways. Evidence suggests however, that cortical lesions may also implicate phonation. We carried out acoustic and perceptual analyses of the phonation of /a/ in 60 males with aphasia (20 Wernicke's, 20 Broca's, 20 subcortical aphasia) and 20 males matched in age with no neurological or speech-language disturbances. All groups with aphasia were significantly more impaired on the majority of acoustic and perceptual measures as compared with the control speakers. Within the subjects with aphasia, subjects with subcortical aphasia were more impaired on most measures compared to subjects with Broca's aphasia, and they, in turn, more impaired than those with Wernicke's aphasia. Lesions in regions involved in sound production-perception result in dysfunction of the entire neuro-cognitive system of articulation-phonological language processing.

AB - Language ability (competence) represents capacity of the speaker to use units of his language and rules for their combination. We need to make a difference between language ability and voice activity (linguistic performance) which represents a way of using language (both in the field of speech production and in the domain of understanding). The aim of study was to determine lexical-semantic abilities of adolescents with developmental disorders in comparison with adolescents with typical development. The sample was made up of 77 students from fifth to eighth grade. Information about disorders in the development were obtained from the history data and expert opinion of teachers. Semantic test, free word association test and definition test were applied for the assessment of lexical-semantic abilities. Analysis of variance (ANOVA), t-test, percentages and mean were used in data processing. The results have shown that adolescents with developmental disorders have worse lexical-semantic abilities than adolescents with typical development.

abstract = "Language ability (competence) represents capacity of the speaker to use units of his language and rules for their combination. The results have shown that adolescents with developmental disorders have worse lexical-semantic abilities than adolescents with typical development., Jezička sposobnost (kompetencija) predstavlja kapacitet govornika da upotrebljava jedinice svog jezika, kao i pravila za njihovo kombinovanje. AB - The results of the screening of language and cognitive functions in patients with depression are presented in the paper. The Mini Mental State Examination and Aphasia Screening Test are applied. The results showed that most patients with depression have intact language and cognitive functions. However, in for patients mild form of dementia is identified. Besides, some patients have scarce narrative discourse, incomplete sentences, wordfinding difficulties and verbal paraphasia. .
Pored toga, identifikoavni su jezički deficiti u vidu oskudnog narativnog diskursa, nedovršenih rečenica, teškoća u nalaženju sadržajnih reči i prisustva verbalnih parafazija. .

AB - The analysis of repetition ability in the aphasics is presented in this paper. The Sample consisted of 34 aphasic patients, age from 42 to 91 years. The diagnosis of aphasia was done according Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination (BDAE). Focal brain lesion was determined by CT and MRI. In the assessment of repetition ability subtests for repetition of words and repeating phrases from BDAE were used. The obtained results have shown that repetition deficits appeared in fluent and non-fluent aphasias. However, repetition disorders are prominent in non-fluent aphasias comparing to fluent types of aphasia. The diferent pattern of repetition deficits between fluent and non-fluent aphasias is ponited out. reading disorders in tested group of aphasic patients suggest that both, anterior and posterior parts of the brain have function in reading. .
