Physical activity and quality of life of older adults

AB  - Physical activity is considered to be the most important step in improving the health of not only the elderly, but the entire population. Lack of physical activity is a risk factor for chronic diseases (diabetes, depression, cardiovascular disease, and stroke). If we are engaged regularly in physical activity, and even in a minimal amount of, it reduces the risk of many diseases. The main objective of this paper is to examine the opinion of elderly about the impact of physical activity in some segments of the quality of life of people of the third age. The specific objective of this study is to determine whether there were differences in opinion of respondents on the connection between physical exercise and health as an aspect of quality of life among the elderly population in the Republic of Serbia, Switzerland and Greece. The research was conducted on a sample of 410 respondents aged 65 to 70 years. Compared to the half of the respondents were equally represented by men and women. The structure of respondents by country is as follows: Switzerland 134 respondents, 120 respondents Greece and the Republic of Serbia 156 respondents. Data were collected through an anonymous questionnaire consisting of 3 parts. The first part of the questionnaire contained questions on general information of respondents, the second part of the issues are physical exercise and relate to frequency and the type of exercise and the third part of the questionnaire contained statements about the opinion of respondents who are the impacts of physical activity. The third part is divided into four parts. Results of the research suggest that physical activity has a positive influence on a better quality of life of the elderly, that is, it contributes to their better health and functioning in daily life, better mental health and better quality of interpersonal relationships, regardless of whether the respondents are from Switzerland, Serbia or Greece. The inclusion of the elderly in groups of organized exercise is an important factor in maintaining, preserving and improving the health and also the best way of bringing the body to the physical and the mental shape. An important task of any advanced society is to support elderly to show their age into a more active and productive period of life, which will surely follow and the subjective feeling of complete and qualitative life.
