The risk of burnout syndrome in speech-language pathologists in the republic of Serbia

AB  - Burnout is a current topic which many researchers are dealing with. This syndrome
is most commonly considered to occur in people who are engaged in ‘helping
professions’. Since speech-language pathologists belong to the helping professions, the
goal of this study was to assess the extent to which burnout symptoms are present among
speech-language pathologists in the Republic of Serbia. The sample of this research
included 150 speech-language pathologists employed in state institutions and private
centres throughout the Republic of Serbia. The assessment of burnout symptoms was
performed using the Maslach Burnout Inventory – Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS),
which measures three different dimensions: emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation, and
personal achievement. The use of statistical procedures confirmed the majority of the
research hypotheses. This population displays burnout symptoms, which are usually low
(on the Depersonalisation and Personal Achievement scales) or high (Emotional
Exhaustion) in degree. According to the findings of this study, while older speechlanguage pathologists report a high level of emotional exhaustion, they also report a
higher level of personal achievement. Respondents with more work experience report a
greater level of exhaustion. Lower levels of emotional weariness and a lower degree of
personal achievement were reported by speech-language pathologists with less work
experience. Satisfaction with one’s level of income was found to be the most significant
predictor of burnout symptoms. Marital status and the number of children have not been
associated with burnout symptoms.
AB  - Сагоревање на послу једна је од актуелних тема данашњице и све више
истраживања се њоме бави. Сматра се да су јој нарочито подложни професионалци из такозваних „помагачких професија“. С обзиром на то да професија
логопеда спада у помагачке професије, циљ истраживања био је да се утврди
степен у којем су симптоми сагоревања на послу присутни код ових стручњака
у Републици Србији. У овом истраживању учествовало је 150 логопеда запослених у државним и приватним установама широм Републике Србије. Испитивање
симптома сагоревања обављено је помоћу Упитника сагоревања на послу за помагачка занимања (енгл. Maslach Burnout Inventory – Human Services Survey
(МBI-HSS)) који мери различите димензије: емоционалну исцрпљеност, деперсонализацију и лични успех. Применом статистичких поступака потврђена је већина истраживачких хипотеза. Симптоми сагоревања, углавном ниског (на скалама деперсонализације и личног успеха) или високог степена (емоционална
исцрпљеност), постоје у овој популацији. Резултати овог истраживања указују
да старији логопеди пријављују виши ниво личног професионалног успеха иако
осећају и висок ниво емоционалне исрцпљености. Већи степен исрцпљености се
појављује код испитаника са дужим радним стажом. Код логопеда са краћим
радним стажом уочени су нижи нивои емоционалне исцрпљености, али и мањи
ниво личног успеха. Као најзначанији предиктор симптома сагоревања показало
се задовoљство висином прихода. Показало се да брачни статус и број деце нису
повезани са симптомима сагоревања

AB  - Uvod: Poznato je da se jezički poremećaji ispoljavaju u demenciji. Međutim, oni
još uvek nisu dovoljno specifikovani u odnosu na tip demencije.
Cilj: Cilj ovog rada je pregled i bliže određivanje simptoma jezičkog poremećaja
kod različitih tipova demencije.
Metode: Pretraga literature izvršena je uz pomoć specijalizovanih elektronskih
baza podataka, kao i štampanih udžbenika, monografija i zbornika radova.
Rezultati: Poremećaji jezika sastavni su deo kliničke slike različitih tipova demencije.
Kod Alchajmerove bolesti, primarne progresivne afazije i nekih tipova
vaskularne demencije jezički poremećaji ispoljavaju se već u početnim fazama
bolesti, te predstavljaju njihov karakterističan simptom. S druge strane, kod
Parkinsonove bolesti i demencije Levijevih tela poremećaji jezika javljaju se
u kasnijim fazama, sa progrediranjem demencije. Takođe, jezički deficiti kod
nekih tipova demencije (Parkinsonova bolest, demencija Levijevih tela) mogu
da se jave kao posledica oštećenja drugih kognitivnih funkcija, dok kod pojedinih
oblika frontotemporalne demencije (primarna progresivna afazija) oni
predstavljaju primarni kognitivni poremećaj.
Zaključak: Poznavanje jezičkih poremećaja kod različitih tipova demencije
doprinosi bližem određivanju njihove prirode, kao i diferencijalnoj dijagnozi.
Dodatno, svest o prisustvu jezičkih poremećaja kod različitih tipova demencije
ukazuje na potrebu uključivanja pacijenata sa demencijom u govornu-jezičku
i kognitivnu terapiju u cilju poboljšanja kvaliteta života pacijenata i članova
njihovih porodica.
AB  - Introduction: It is recognized that language difficulties accompany dementia. However,
regarding the type of dementia, they are still not sufficiently specific.
Aim: This paper aims to review and determine more closely the symptoms of language
disorders in different dementia types.
Methods: Specialized electronic databases, printed textbooks, monographs and
collections of papers were all used to search for recent data.
Results: Language disorders are an integral part of the clinical picture of different types
of dementia. In Alzheimer’s disease, primary progressive aphasia and some cases of vascular
dementia, language disorders are manifested already in the initial stages of the disease and
represent their characteristic symptom. On the other hand, in Parkinson’s disease and Lewy
body dementia, language disorders manifest in the later stages, with the progression of
dementia. Additionally, language deficits in some types of dementia (Parkinson’s disease,
Lewy body dementia) can occur due to damage to other cognitive functions. In contrast, in
certain types of frontotemporal dementia (primary progressive aphasia), language deficits
represent a primary cognitive disorder.
Conclusion: Understanding language disorders in various dementia types contributes to
a closer determination of their nature and differential diagnosis. Furthermore, the awareness
that in many types of dementia, language disorders can be present indicates the necessity of
including dementia patients in speech-language and cognitive therapy to improve both the
patients’ and their family’s quality of life.

Naming ability in people with aphasia

AB  - Introduction: Most people with aphasia have difficulties in producing content words on nam-
ing tests and during spontaneous speech. The aim of this paper was to examine naming
deficits in patients with different types of aphasic syndromes.
Methods: The sample consisted of 24 subjects, who were stratified into fluent and non-fluent
aphasia groups according to the characteristics of spontaneous speech. The fluent aphasia
group included subjects with Wernicke’s (N = 7) and conduction aphasia (N = 6), while the
group with non-fluent aphasia comprised of subjects with Broca’s (N = 6) and transcortical
motor aphasia (N = 5). In all patients, aphasia resulted from stroke. The Boston Diagnostic
Aphasia Examination subtests for Visual confrontation naming and Responsive naming, as
well as the Boston Naming Test (BNT) were used to assess naming ability. Descriptive (Mean, Min, Max, SD) and inferential statistical methods (Chi square test, t-test and Mann-Whitney U
test) were used to process the data.
The results showed that patients with non-fluent aphasias were significantly more successful
on the Visual confrontation naming subtest (U = 33.50, p = 0.02), as well as on the Responsive
naming (U = 39.00, p = 0.04) compared to patients with fluent types of aphasia. Additionally,
subjects with non-fluent aphasias had significantly higher achievements on the BNT. The
groups differed in terms of the representation of types of errors.
Conclusion: Naming deficits occur in all types of aphasia, but are more pronounced in the
group of subjects with fluent aphasia.

AB  - U ovom radu prikazani su podaci o jezičkoj sposobnosti u starijem životnom dobu. Podaci govore
u prilog bolje očuvanosti sposobnosti razumevanja jezika u odnosu na njegovu produkciju.
Promene na jezičkom planu pripisuju se delovanju različitih uzroka: neuralne reorganizacije
jezika u starijem životnom dobu, posledicama slabljenja drugih kognitivnih funkcija,
perceptivnim promenama, slabljenju oralno-motoričke kontrole govora, kao i delovanja drugih
bioloških faktora. Pregled dostupne literature pokazuje da je u ovoj oblasti najviše radova
posvećeno istraživanju funkcije imenovanja i otkrivanju prirode grešaka u ovom domenu. Iako
empirijski podaci pokazuju da neki aspekti jezika u starosti slabe, istraživači su saglasni u stavu
da jezik ostaje relativno dobro očuvan u starijem životnom dobu, te da starije osobe imaju
očuvane lingvističke sposobnosti koje im omogućavaju uspešnu komunikaciju sa drugim ljudima.
AB  - This paper presents data on language ability in the elderly. The data speak in favor of better
preservation of language comprehension than its production. Changes at the language level are
linked to a variety of causes: neural reorganization of language in older age, consequences of the
weakening of other cognitive functions, perceptual changes, weakening of oral-motor control of
speech, as well as the impact of other biological factors. A review of the available literature
reveals that the majority of publications in this field are devoted to examining the naming function
and revealing the nature of errors in this domain. Although empirical data indicate that some
aspects of language weaken with age, researchers agree that language remains relatively well
preserved in old age and that elderly people maintain linguistic abilities that enable them to
communicate successfully with others.

Promene na jezičkom planu pripisuju se delovanju različitih uzroka: neuralne reorganizacije
jezika u starijem životnom dobu, posledicama slabljenja drugih kognitivnih funkcija,
perceptivnim promenama, slabljenju oralno-motoričke kontrole govora, kao i delovanja drugih
bioloških faktora. Pregled dostupne literature pokazuje da je u ovoj oblasti najviše radova
posvećeno istraživanju funkcije imenovanja i otkrivanju prirode grešaka u ovom domenu. Iako
empirijski podaci pokazuju da neki aspekti jezika u starosti slabe, istraživači su saglasni u stavu
da jezik ostaje relativno dobro očuvan u starijem životnom dobu, te da starije osobe imaju
očuvane lingvističke sposobnosti koje im omogućavaju uspešnu komunikaciju sa drugim ljudima., This paper presents data on language ability in the elderly. The data speak in favor of better
preservation of language comprehension than its production. Changes at the language level are
linked to a variety of causes: neural reorganization of language in older age, consequences of the
weakening of other cognitive functions, perceptual changes, weakening of oral-motor control of
speech, as well as the impact of other biological factors. A review of the available literature
reveals that the majority of publications in this field are devoted to examining the naming function
and revealing the nature of errors in this domain. Although empirical data indicate that some
aspects of language weaken with age, researchers agree that language remains relatively well
preserved in old age and that elderly people maintain linguistic abilities that enable them to
communicate successfully with others.",

AB  - Pregled savremene literature pokazuje da sa porastom učestalosti traumatskih povreda
glave u novije vreme, raste broj empirijskih studija koje se bave ispitivanjem kvaliteta
života i psihosocijalnih posledica koje ostavljaju traumatska oštećenja mozga u detinjstvu
i odraslom dobu. Rezultati ovih studija pokazuju da moždana trauma može da ostavi
dugotrajne posledice na celokupno funkcionisanje osobe u različitim domenima –
kognitivnom, jezičkom, socijalnom i emocionalnom. Uvreženo je mišljenje da ispoljavanje
deficita u ovim domenima korelira sa težinom povrede, odnosno da teže povrede
uslovljavaju teže i dugotrajnije posledice kod ove populacije. Međutim, noviji empirijski
podaci ukazuju da u dečjoj populaciji čak i blage povrede mogu trajno da poremete razvoj
nekih psihičkih funkcija. Kao rezultat tih nalaza polako se napušta tradicionalno shvatanje
da kod dece dolazi do potpunog oporavka zbog plastičnosti nezrelog mozga. Dodatna
analiza empirijskih nalaza pokazuje da dugoročno ispoljavanje poremećaja različitih
aspekata kognicije i ponašanja značajno narušava kvalitet života osoba koje su pretrpele
traumatsku povredu mozga. Ovakvi nalazi ukazuju na neophodnost kontinuiranog
praćenja i pružanja podrške ovoj populaciji u cilju obezbeđivanja uslova i otklanjanja
potencijalnih barijera u njihovom funkcionisanju u svakodnevnom životu.
AB  - A study of recent literature reveals that, with the recent increase in the occurrence of
traumatic head injuries, the number of empirical studies investigating the quality of life
and psychosocial implications of traumatic brain injury in childhood and adulthood is
increasing. The findings of these studies indicate that brain trauma can have long-term
effects on a person’s overall functioning in a variety of domains, including cognitive,
linguistic, social, and emotional functioning. It is widely held that the manifestation of
deficits in these domains correlates with the severity of the injuries, implying that more
severe injuries result in more severe and long-term consequences in this population.
Recent empirical data, however, show that even mild injuries in the pediatric population
can irreversibly affect the development of some mental functions. As a result of these
findings, the long-held notion that children recover completely due to the plasticity of the
immature brain is gradually being abandoned. Additional empirical findings analysis
reveals that long-term manifestations of impairments in numerous domains of cognition
and behaviour significantly reduce the quality of life of people who have suffered a
traumatic brain injury. Such findings highlight the importance of continuous monitoring
and support for this population to provide conditions and remove any potential barriers
to their functioning in daily life.

Phonological awareness in children with developmental language disorder

AB  - Children with developmetal language disorder have impaired developmental pattern of language
structure. Literature data speak in favor of delay and/or difficulties in development of phonological,
lexical, morphological and syntactic structure, but the nature of developmental language disorder
(DLD) has still not been elucidated. The aim of this paper was to present and analyze data about
phonological awareness in children with DLD based on a systematic literature review. Also, we
wanted to point out some methods of assessment and stimuli/encouragement in development
of phonological abilities. The research presented in the analyzed literature have shown that
current knowledge regarding phonological awareness in children with DLD is mainly obtained
from comparative stuides of children with developmental language disorder and children with
normal language development. A large number of results has revealed that different components
of phonological awareness in children with DLD are less developed compared to their peers with
typical development. Studies have also presented current assessment techniques and importance
of phonological awareness preventive stimulation progams, which are an important indicator/
parameter for the development of reading and writing as well as for onset of impairments in
learning these skills.
AB  - Децата со развојно јазично нарушување имаат изменет образец на развојот на јазичната
структура. Податоците од литературата сведочат во прилог на доцнење и/или абнормално-
сти во развојот на фонолошката, лексичката, морфолошката и синтаксичката структура, во
природата на развојното јазично нарушување (РЈН) сеуште е непозната. Цел на овој труд е
врз основа на преглед на литература, на систематски начин да се прикажат и анализираат
податоци за фонолошката свесност кај децата со РЈН. Исто така сакавме да истакнеме некои
методи на проценка и поттикнување на развојот на фонолошките способности. Резултатите
од анализата на податоци од литературата покажуваат дека современите сознанија за фо-
нолошката свесност кај децата со РЈН воглавно потекнуваат од компаративните студии на
достигнувања на децата со развојнојазично нарушување и деца со типичен развој. Поголемиот
број резултати покажуваат дека различните компоненти на фонолошка свесност кај децата со
РЈН се развиени во помала мерка во споредба со нивните врсници со типичен развој. Исто
така, прикажани се актуелните техники на проценка и истакнато е значењето на превентив-
ните програми за поттикнување на развојот на фонолошката свесност, која претставува важен
показател на развојот на читање и пишување и покава на пречки ва учењето на овие вештини.

AB  - U ovom istraživanju ispitivali smo povezanost sagorevanja na poslu (putem Opšteg upitinika izgaranja na poslu – Maslach Burnout Inventory; MBI-GS) i stre- sa (putem Skale roditeljskog stresa, Parenal Stress Scale; PSS) kod 100 roditelja (50 majki i 50 očeva) dece uključene u logopedski tretman. Ispitanici su na subskalama Emocionalne iscrpljenosti i Cinizam ispoljili umeren stepen, dok je na skali Lične učinkovitosti pokazan nizak stepen izgaranja u odno- su na vrednosti normativnog uzorka. Jedina značajnost je uočena za dimenziju Emocionalna iscrpljenost u odnosu na bračni status ispitanika, dok ostale razlike nisu statistički značajne. Rezultati na Skali roditeljskog stre- sa ukazali su da su u proseku naši ispitanici doživljavaju stres umerenog intenziteta. Nije uočena značajna povezanost između izgaranja na poslu i roditeljskog stresa.
AB  - In this study, we examined the relationship between burnout at work (via the Maslach Burnout Inventory – MBI-GS) and stress (via the Parental Stress Scale – PSS) in 100 parents (50 mothers and 50 fathers) of children involved in speech-language therapy.
Respondents showed a moderate degree on the subscales Emotional Exhaustion and Cynicism, while the scale of Personal Efficiency showed a low degree of burnout to the values of the normative sample. The only significance was observed for the dimension of Emotional exhaustion with the marital status of the respondents, while other differences were not statistically significant.
The results on the Parental Stress Scale indicated that, on average, our respondents experience moderate-intensity stress. No significant association was observed between burnout at work and parental stress.
